Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo is a uniquely Western-style comic. Over the more than two decades since beginning his series, Sakai has won praise from international organizations for his accurate depictions of Japanese history and for the quality of his work, yet the series is not translated into Japanese, nor is it written in the style of Japanese manga.
